Objectives (2017–2020)

  • Safekeeping of the BE data in a sustainable platform, including server management and maintenance, user support, and tool development.
  • Making BE data efficiently accessible within the Exploratories, including data discovery enhancement, support for geospatial data, and using visualization techniques.
  • Providing an environment for data quality including manual data checking, and development and provision of a data quality framework.
  • Increasing the external visibility of the BE data by interlinking BExIS with national and international initiatives.
  • Migrating to BEXIS 2.


Objectives (2014–2017)

Some of the tasks planned for the 4th BE project phase (2014 – 2017) are given below. These include

  • Managing the data storage and information exchange platform (BExIS) and migrating the system to the new software version
  • Continuation of the data mobilization and user support task
  • Ensuring that the data is properly curated in time by semi-automating the data quality assurance procedure
  • Providing GIS functionality for search and download of data, and for managing the plots and subplots
  • Investigating means for efficient storage and analysis of the data using the latest available technologies
  • Using semantic technologies to automate a lot of the tasks, which have been, hitherto, manually done by the researchers
  • Providing visualizations tools for data presentation, exploration, interpretation and quality control
  • Collaborating with other external research data repositories.


Objectives (2007-2014)

The database shall give the platform for storage of results and for exchange of data between groups, also the database has the function to organize and document field work and common resources, such as the Experimental Plots.



A new information system is being established using IBM?s DB2 as the database backbone. The database as well as the entire information system relies on XML technology, especially schemas. The system outline follows a service-oriented architecture and employs latest web technologies such as AJAX for interactive and intuitive web based graphical user interfaces. The modular outline allows for the integration of additional databases, and data with analysis tools. Interrelations between data sources (data sets as well as external data bases) and analysis tools are modeled and formalized by an ontology, which also comprise an analogy of employed terminology.


BExIS Establishment between 2007 and 2011

A functional prototype of the Biodiversity-Exploratory Information System (BExIS) has been established by Dr. Jens Nieschulze and colleages (group leader Prof. Dr. Ernst-Detlef Schulze), MPI Biogeochemistry Jena. The system is heavily used within the project, mostly by the resources and map functionality but increasingly also by its data management capabilities.
