Local Management Teams
The three exploratories with all study plots are managed by local teams. These teams coordinate all activities of field work, information exchange with land owners / land users and the central coordination of the Biodiversity Exploratories.
The Local Management Teams (LMTs) form essential part of the core projects of the Biodiversity Exploratories. Major exploratory tasks have shifted from plot implementation in the initial phase to onsite management of core and further projects as well as facilitation and synchronization of research activities. The main tasks of the three LMTs (one per exploratory) include maintenance and instrumentation of all Grid Plots (GPs) and Experimental Plots (EPs) including Very Intensive Plots (VIPs). They obtain research permits, introduce researchers to the logistics of the exploratories and plots and assist them in the field. The LMT continuously update information on local land-use and management, and provide base-line data in collaboration with other core projects (i.e., forest data, maps) as a service unit. Importantly, the LMTs liaise constantly with local stakeholders and are responsible for public relations in the regional context. The teams, each consisting of a head, local manager, a mechatronic, a forester, a technician, and a technical assistant, collaborate intensively among each other and within the exploratories. They deliver professional base-line data relevant for all core and further projects in a timely manner. The LMTs form together with the other core projects the administrative and operational backbone of the exploratories. Given the high number of participants, the particular setting of the research plots in a landscape with large numbers of different landowners and land-users as well as different land-use intensities and the high workload associated with plot maintenance, research permits and overall coordination, the LMTs are indispensable for the shortand long-term continuation of the project as an interdisciplinary research platform for biodiversity.
